Peachland’s Water Future — Planning for the Long Term
Water has understandably become one of the biggest issues being discussed in Peachland.
With ongoing drought conditions and pressure on our upland water supply, we need to look beyond simply getting through the next dry summer. We need a reliable, sustainable and financially responsible long-term solution.
At UBCM, Mayor and Council had the opportunity to discuss Peachland’s water challenges directly with provincial representatives. One of the important discussions was around the options being considered for strengthening our future water supply.
The alternatives being studied include a major connection to Okanagan Lake, with significant infrastructure and pumping requirements, as well as strengthening our upland water supply system. The difference in potential cost is substantial, which is why the technical work, lifecycle costs and long-term reliability all need to be carefully considered before a final decision is made.
What encouraged me at UBCM was the opportunity for Peachland to put our situation directly in front of the Province and begin discussing the funding assistance that will likely be necessary.
There is still work to do. The District is continuing to evaluate the options, and no final infrastructure solution has been selected.
For me, the objective is straightforward: secure Peachland’s water future while protecting taxpayers and making decisions based on good information and long-term planning.
I’ll continue sharing information as this work progresses.
